What kind of church was the church in Sardis? Today we’re going to take a look at the fifth church of the seven churches of Revelation.
The church in Sardis
According to Christ’s evaluation the church in Sardis hada highly esteemed reputation among the first century Church. He however has a different view of them.
This church actually receives the least amount of description out of all the seven churches. Jesus says that the church is known to “be alive” but in reality they are dead (Rev. 3:1). Perhaps this means that among the other churches in their time they had a large congregation. Or maybe they were viewed as a successful church for some other reason.
You can probably think of a church or two that is huge or has a large influence in your community or in the U.S. that you don’t think is actually “alive”. In America and especially in developing countries a “health-wealth” gospel has really taken hold of the Church. Perhaps Sardis was a church that fell into this category. Either way Christ warns the church that they better get real or they’re going to regret it.
Are you like the church in Sardis?
Do you have a good reputation among your church community but on the inside you feel dead? Do you act one way around those from your church and another around your friends, coworkers, and family?
We are all guilty of putting on a show. I mean the central tenant of the Christian faith is that Christ had to die a horrible death in our place to pay for our sins. It wasn’t painful because we’re all good people.
Our goal as Christians and the church should be to live an authentic Christ-like life. Our actions should be genuine and all the credit for our goodness should go to God.
